Return to the Underworld

Sooo…I just finished playing the Avernum 5 demo a few days ago, and it was Awesome. With a capital “A”. Except better. I don’t want to say too much, for fear of ruining the story, but suffice it to say that there’s quite a bit of role reversal this time. The player characters are now soldiers of the Empire, enemies in Avernum 1 and 2, and tentative allies in 4 and now 5. There is, however, a faction of rebels against the Empire, who would see it return to it’s evil ways, and the player is tasked with combating them. The game engine hasn’t changed much from the slightly Geneforge-inspired engine of Avernum 4, except that there were quite a few new graphical updates, not all of which are immediately noticeable. Gameplay-wise, there are some new features, such as “battle disciplines”, weaker spell-like abilities usable by combat-focused characters, and secret buttons, which return some of the “zOMG HIDDEN DOORWAYS” from the earlier Avernum games. There isn’t all that much improvement, but there wasn’t many things that needed to be improved, im my opinion, and Avernum 5 is still a great game. Since I am, of course, a crazed Spiderweb Software fanboy, I had to register, and my code should be arriving soon. *can’t wait*

Now, I’ll leave you with another YouTube find. Those crazy Germans…
