Hiveless Mind

And the stars on the battlefield shiver in tears, a dead-bright lesson from a thousand light-years…

…because ripping off song lyrics for a blog post title is the thing these days. I mean, all the cool kids are doing it!

So, it seems that Mike has kicked the bucket. Ahh well, it was coming, I suppose. I mean, Nick seems to have quit blogging, and neither Mike nor myself had posted in quite a while. Still, it pains me to see that I’m the last one of us who’s “still alive”, so to speak, or maybe it doesn’t. This sentence no verb. I suppose the reader would wonder if I could be expected to quit any time soon, but the fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately as the case may be, I’ll keep on blogging ’til the end of time, or at least when I get bored of it. As one can gather, that time has not yet come. Mike has also mentioned something about a “joint political blog”, something I seem to be invited to contribute to. Of course, I’d love to. Further bulletins as events warrant.

To bring this disorganized and rather shoddy post to a close, I’d just like to let my fans, or lack thereof, know that I’m still alive and will hopefully not stop blogging here for quite a while.

Also: fear it.

The Force Unleashed trailer

Holy crap. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed trailer.
I would embed it, but WordPress won’t let me.

I’m pissed off at WordPress…

…because it won’t let me embed my Last.fm Flash “recently played” widget. Apparently, all Flash and Java is removed from WordPress.com pages, posts, and text widgets, for security reasons. Ah well.

Update: I’ve since added a last.fm RSS ‘recently playing’ widget. It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done.

His path was marked by the stars of the Southern Hemisphere…

So…yeah. I realize I haven’t posted for quite a while, I’m still alive, just had a lot going on, what with the end of the semester and such. I’m satisfied, how about you?

Other then trying to patch up my end-of-the-semester grades, something which took more work then I had hoped, I’ve just been hanging around, playing various video games, and listening to more Paul Simon then is probably healthy, something you’d already know if you read the post title, or checked out  my last.fm profile, where my various musical obsessions can be tracked and tabulated for your examination. Speaking of music, those of you who know me well will know my tastes can be labeled as “very eclectic”, which in English means “I will listen to anything”, from Green Day to the aforementioned Mr. Simon, from Linkin Park to Steve Savitzky, so be prepared to be surprised.

Enough talk of music, I’m sure nobody actually cares what games I play, but I’ll use this section of the post to plug Vega Strike, the open-source space trading and combat simulator, which is awesome. It may not be graphically advanced, but it’s pretty good for an open source game, and ’tis free. What can beat free video games?

Yeah, I guess that’s all for now, and I’ll bring this post to a close with the assurance (or perhaps it’s a warning?) of more rants to come in the near future. Oh, and expect the site to update soon, with a links section and stuff.

We do what we must, because we can…

Sooo…yeah. Sorry I haven’t posted since forever, I’ve had a lot of the mind, and even more on the schedule. But back on topic. I finished Avernum 5 a couple weeks ago, and instantly started a new game, because I wanted to try a different party build. That’s the kind of Spiderweb fanboy I am. But, the practical upshot of all this is that having two Hedge Mages (mine weren’t actually Hedge Mages, they where Custom, because that class gives way too much endurance for a caster) with further specialization in Mage or Priest spells is awesome. I mean, TWO Lightning Sprays (four with Haste!) in a round…put down the beatdown! But I digress, I’m getting off topic again. My life, as it is, has really been fairly normal, but I have discovered the awesomeness that is Jonathan Coulton. He wrote Still Alive, the song that plays at the end of Portal. Of course, everything related to Portal is incredibly awesome, and JoCo is no exception. The Cake is a lie!
I guess that’s all I have to yammer about now so, Hawk out!

Return to the Underworld

Sooo…I just finished playing the Avernum 5 demo a few days ago, and it was Awesome. With a capital “A”. Except better. I don’t want to say too much, for fear of ruining the story, but suffice it to say that there’s quite a bit of role reversal this time. The player characters are now soldiers of the Empire, enemies in Avernum 1 and 2, and tentative allies in 4 and now 5. There is, however, a faction of rebels against the Empire, who would see it return to it’s evil ways, and the player is tasked with combating them. The game engine hasn’t changed much from the slightly Geneforge-inspired engine of Avernum 4, except that there were quite a few new graphical updates, not all of which are immediately noticeable. Gameplay-wise, there are some new features, such as “battle disciplines”, weaker spell-like abilities usable by combat-focused characters, and secret buttons, which return some of the “zOMG HIDDEN DOORWAYS” from the earlier Avernum games. There isn’t all that much improvement, but there wasn’t many things that needed to be improved, im my opinion, and Avernum 5 is still a great game. Since I am, of course, a crazed Spiderweb Software fanboy, I had to register, and my code should be arriving soon. *can’t wait*

Now, I’ll leave you with another YouTube find. Those crazy Germans…

Bleach

Oh, I forgot to mention this in my earlier post, but Nick and Mike have gotten me hooked on the anime series Bleach. I’m currently on episode 18. Now, back to Avernum!

I am not dead yet!

I am not dead yet
I can dance and I can sing
I am not dead yet
I can do the Highland Fling

Seriously, folks, I’m still alive! Recently it seems Alltel, my Internet Provider, has decided to slow my internet connection to a standstill. It really pisses me off.  But enough about that, because the good folks…er…the good fellow (that would be Jeff Vogel) down at Spiderweb Software have just released the Mac version of Avernum 5, the latest installment of the award-winning Avernum series of shareware computer RPGs, and for those of you stuck under the control of the Evil Microsoft Empire, the Windows port will be out early in early 2008. As most of you are probably aware, I’m a huge fan of the illustrious Mr. Vogel’s games, and of course I’m downloading the demo for Avernum 5, and hopefully, I’ll be purchasing the game soon. I’ll be posting a more detailed review as soon as I’ve played through the demo. Hawk out.

Somebody set up us the EA Games!

Sorry I haven’t posted for a while, I’ve been bogged down with school stuff. I’m sure many of you are aware of the fact that EA Games has purchased BioWare (makers of some of the best CRPGs ever) and Pandemic (who made Star Wars: Battlefront, among others). In my opinion, EA is the devil, and it’s really too bad to hear that BioWare, one of my favorite developers, now belong to them, I’m sorry this post is so short, so I will leave you with this (fake) quote from Sun Tsu:

“The best victory is when all your opponent’s base are belong to you before there is any actual setting them up the bomb.”
